Barbacarlo 2012

Rare wines from northern Italy....

The estate of Barbacarlo is run by Lino Maga. His family is deep rooted in wine making in the region of Lombardy and have been producing single cru wines, Barbacarlo, since 1886. The 300 meters above sea level vineyards clutch steep slopes surrounded by forest in the hills outside Broni, Oltrepò Pavese. Just four hectares of vines are planted on clay and average 50 years of age.

Vineyard work is at its basic, tended to by hand, no harsh chemical treatments and come harvest time, rigorous selections of regional grapes; Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta and carefully selected for future blending. After fermentation and resting period, they are racked according to some biodynamic calendar principles and eventually bottled, unfiltered in the spring. Lino takes pride in the fact he has maintained his identity and diversity by growing regional varietals. These wines are like once upon a time, with current market releases dating back at least 2 decades.
