Giorgio Nicolini Piccola Nera 2018

Giorgio Nicolini Piccola Nera 2018

$28.00
The Nicolinis' 2018 Piccola Nera is one of those wonderfully chameleon-esque wines that may be ‘rosso’ by name, but in reality is far more versatile in nature, performing just as well when seen through the lens of a 'lighter and chillable' red, verging on rosato, or even the ramato ('copper') stylings of the Friuli region. And just as the region from which it emerges blurs cultural lines, the Piccola Nera blurs seasonal ones, possessing the multi-dimensionality to ride its way through an afternoon of sunshine (and scattered showers), coast through a dramatic dusk, and fit straight into a chilly evening. The Piccola Nera’s nose is set in sun-swept wildflower fields and lush berry brambles, giving way to zippy acid, delicate tannins and a lithe, bantamweight mouthfeel. With just a few hundred cases produced, and only in optimal vintages that allow for a little extra production at that, this is one of those Istrian rarities we look forward to any time we can get our hands on it.

A stone’s throw from the Slovenian border, overlooking an indent in the Gulf of Trieste that moves from the industrial to the bucolic with every rounded cove, the port town of Muggia is where the Nicolini clan lay claim to a small and very-family oriented winemaking project. It is here that the youngest generation of the Nicolinis continue the tradition of old-school winemaking first founded by their grandparents, with scant rows of native specialties in Vitovska, Refosco, Piccola Nera and Malvasia filling every nook and cranny of open space between residences, sheds and fences, feathering out across a gentle slope that gradually drops toward the gulf. As one would imagine at this northerly edge of the Istrian peninsula, with Slovenia beginning literally at the end of the family’s driveway, and Croatia less than a mile to the south, you can see why a pervasive yet hard-to-pin-down sense a cross-cultural richness exists across all facets of life, including wine, with the Nicolinis' bottles combining equal doses of Slavic vibrancy, Austrian precision and Italian rusticity.
