Bereche Brut Reserve NV [2020 base]

Bereche Brut Reserve NV [2020 base]

$72.00

The Brut Réserve is Bérêche’s flagship blend. It combines the three classic Champagne grapes – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier in roughly equal proportions – from vintages spanning the decade. The blend is based on 70% wines from the base year (2020, here) with a balance of reserve wines. A model of harmony, nuance and verve, it is always a pure expression of the domaine’s varied terroirs that demonstrates both the Bérêche brother’s great skill and their originality. Each parcel of vines is vinified and aged separately in barrel with its ambient yeasts. To balance their richness and depth with bright acidity, Raphaël and Vincent make certain that the wines do not go through malolactic, and each bottle is later disgorged by hand and minimally dosed to preserve the purity of its expression.The 2020 blend shows plenty of taut stone fruit, orange citrus, and a strong stony minerality, savory-leaning yet light on its feet. On the dry end for a Brut without being austere, it's rife with notes of dried pear and yellow apple, hazelnut, spice, and dried flowers that build into the voluptuous, resonant finish. A crowd-pleasing way to start any night, and a now benchmark example of the grower Champagne ethos and profile.

It’s been nearly two decades since growers began to dominate the headlines in Champagne. Yet, over that period, surprisingly few growers have managed to separate themselves from the pack, by virtue of their genius or their gift for making Champagne of unique expressiveness. Two that have are the brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche.

This old domaine was founded in 1847, but it has been the innovative work of young Raphaël and Vincent that has made this one of the most talked about Champagne houses, first among France’s sommeliers, cavistes and connoisseurs and now their counterparts in the United States. Building on a strong foundation of traditional Champagne making learned from their father Jean-Pierre, the brothers became two of the region’s most insatiably curious vignerons. To that end, their portfolio not only includes an extraordinarily vibrant NV Brut Réserve, but several micro-cuvées brilliantly conceived to express different aspects of terroir, vintage, and grape variety. espite only having 9 hectares of land, Bérêche has 10 full-time employees tending the vines. That’s a lot. The result? Immaculate vineyards of organically-farmed grapes that reflect exactly where they’re from. This iconic grower-producer turns those grapes into a range of Champagnes – from an exceedingly the refreshing house cuvée here today, to collectible, age-worthy single-vineyard and vintage bottlings.
