It's dry, lemony, and crisp, and, like the Mediterranean winds that sweep over the vineyards, a little salty, too.

Vigne Basse is one of several Vermentino wines made by Giuliani; this particular version comes from their lower-elevation vines (hence the ‘basse’) at 50–100 m in elevation, 5 km from the sea as the crow flies. It is just inside Tuscany but within spitting distance of the border with Liguria. Retaining freshness is one of Giuliani’s obsessions, it seems. Hand-harvesting starts in September but the moment of picking varies across the several vineyard parcels. Grapes from these soils are a little lower in acidity than those from their shale soils – where they grow Vermentino for their Fosso di Corsano label – so in the Vigne Basse they include 5% Albarola to raise the acidity a little. They also avoid malolactic conversion in all their white wines for the same reason. The cellar is on four levels so the grapes are moved by gravity in order to preserve the quality of the fruit. Slow pressing is followed by fermentation with ambient yeasts in stainless-steel tanks, where the wine then ages four months on lees before bottling. 2024 was one of the colder years in the last decade and flavors are a touch more restrained in the wine – more citrus and less orchard fruit, but still at the core the classic Vermentino scent, with emphasis on the stony/salty finish thanks to the cooler weather. Have a glass whenever pesto is involved.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7695/files/TerenzuolaVigneBasseVermentino_5ad9f052-adce-48a9-be23-6a532fbdef38.jpg?v=1689284241
san-barnaba-pelaverga-2023
San Barnaba Verduno Pelaverga 2023

We are already on record as Pelaverga fiends, so combine a branding new-to-market bottling of this high-maintenance grape with fewer than 30 hectares planted and the legitimate hype around its young producers, and, well, consider us intrigued. The 2023 from San Barnaba is everything we love about this singular grape: lifted, peppery, wildly aromatic, and almost impossible not to drink. The team vinifies in order to highlight these trademarks, with shorter maceration to extract color and aromatics without developing excessive tannins, and a relatively brief aging period of 3-6 months, exclusively in stainless steel or cement tanks, ensuring its primary fruit and hallmark spicy notes are preserved without any oak influence. Bright wild strawberry, tart raspberry, candied orange peel, and rose petal leap from the glass, layered with cracked white pepper, sweet spice, and a cooling herbal edge that keeps everything feeling vibrant and alive. The palate is light on its feet but remarkably expressive, balancing juicy red fruit with a savory, saline and mineral streak and mouthwatering freshness. There’s a delicacy to the wine that makes it feel almost weightless, yet the flavors linger beautifully, carried by subtle spice and a gentle floral perfume. Silky tannins stay firmly in the background, letting the wine’s energy, clarity, and pure drinkability take center stage. This is the kind of bottle that disappears very quickly once opened — playful, distinctive, and unmistakably Verduno – and already feels like a cult wine in the making.

For the ‘Ex Alba,’ 100% Trebbiano grapes are hand-harvested before undergoing a very extended maceration (45 days!) in old oak barriques. Spontaneous fermentation is kickstarted with only the help of native yeasts, and the wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no additional SO2. Deep golden-amber with apricot hues, this opens with tangerine peel, dried apricot, passion fruit, and lychee with subtle honey and herbaceous undertones. At first sip, there’s tangy acidity – it’s a little prickly on the tongue – with candied ginger meets stone fruit and salinity. The textured mouthfeel from extended maceration leads to a savory, bone-dry, persistent finish, ending with a hint of sweet smoke and minerality. This is a seriously built and food- friendly orange wine but there’s more than a little rustic irreverence to it; think stewed orange fruit kombucha meets sage incense – pop it open, don’t take yourself too seriously, and be the hippie you want to see in the world.

Alberto and Claudia Carretti are the brains and brawn behind the Podere Paradolo estate, whose wines have garnered a cult-status among the natural wine community over the years. They work in Serravelle, a small town in the Parma hills, where they endeavor to create modern wines while maintaining ancient influence and reverence – so goes the ethos that undergirds the extended macerations and long aging of both their red and white-wine grapes. Purchased in 1972 and converted to viticulture and winemaking in 1989, Alberto’s vision of a rigorously low-intervention venture has guided each and every step along the way, capturing the history and natural bounty of the region here, at the edge of the Po River valley and the Ligurian Apennines, where a good diurnal range and cooling breezes imbue the grapes with exceptionally complex aromas. Long since certified organic and using biodynamic practices, the couple tends to 5 hectares of local variety grapes planted to clay-limestone soils; in the cellar there are only native fermentations, no filtering nor fining, and zero SO2.

The 2020 Barolo from Gian Luca Colombo is a striking release from one of Piedmont’s most thoughtful young voices. Drawn from parcels in Roddi, La Morra and Ravera, it captures the perfume, structure, and tension of each site without ever feeling stitched together. Fermented slowly in steel with native yeasts and long macerations, then aged patiently in large oak and bottle before release, this is Barolo made with a deep respect for tradition, but with a lighter touch and remarkable clarity. Lifted aromas of rose petal, blood orange and crushed herbs give way to layers of wild strawberry, tobacco leaf, leather, and warm spice. There’s a translucency to the fruit that feels almost weightless, yet the wine carries real depth and persistence underneath. Fine, chalky tannins frame the palate without ever overwhelming it, while bright acidity keeps everything taut and energized. There’s something beautifully old-school here — not in a rustic sense, but in the wine’s honesty, perfume, and restraint. Ethereal, savory and quietly compelling, this is the kind of Barolo that keeps pulling you back to the glass, both utterly classic and totally contemporary.

Every season, Giovanni meticulously tests various iterations for his Prete Rosso; the composition changes from year to year. The base is always Nebbiolo vinified as a rosé, to maintain freshness and prevent overextraction; the remaining wines in the blend and their various proportions depend on each vintage’s strengths and characteristics. The 2024 vintage comprises 55% base Nebbiolo rosato, 22.5% Nebbiolo rosso, 21.5% Barbera, and 1% of the white grape Arneis which provides the wine with freshness and acidity. The red fist crushing a cluster of grapes on the label is a not-so-subtle nod to the communist symbol of the Red Fist. The priest for which the winery is named was an outspoken supporter of the coal miner rebellions of Italy during the 1820s. He was exiled to what is now the Roaga property, his life spared due to his affiliation with a very rich and powerful Piemontese family. This was an important moment in the history of workers’ rights in Italy and Giovanni sought to pay homage by creating a wine that was truly for the people. Aromatically, Prete Rosso exhibits notes of delicate strawberry, raspberry, and crisp tart cherry. Bursting with lively acidity on the palate, mild tannins give it just enough backbone leading to an almost saline finish. A touch mysterious, it beguiles the drinker familiar with Nebbiolo. It gives off ‘crushable’ vibes but it’s way more than that: alongside the fruit component, its mentholy herbaceous tones weave themselves harmoniously into a gorgeous tapestry of freshness and power.
