Founded in the 1940s by Gabriele Arduini, the estate is now in the hands of Luciano and his son Andrea, who carry on the family’s passion for precision and tradition. The estate’s nine hectares are planted with Valpolicella classics — Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara — on steep, calcareous slopes that give the wines their energy and definition. Many of the vines are over 40 years old, and the team tends them with a mix of meticulous care and biodynamic respect, keeping both the grapes and the surrounding ecosystem thriving. Winemaking here is all about letting the fruit speak. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in large oak casks, producing wines that are true to the land but never heavy-handed. There is legally a border here, but the people on either side of it share history, language, gastronomy, culture, viticulture, and more. To emphasize this cross-border unity, Ivana (youngest sister of Sasa, daughter of Stanko) has named her first wines ‘POP’ – think ‘popular’ in the sense of ‘of the people.’ This is a nod to the shared, communal spirit of those not constrained or divided by international boundaries here, as well as an indication of the style of wines Ivana is leaning towards. 2023 was the first release of this very small production. For the POP Rosso, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (which have long-standing histories and importance in this corner of the world) are farmed organically, hand-harvested, destemmed and co-fermented spontaneously without sulfur or temperature control. The wine is then aged for 10 months in stainless steel with a racking or two, and bottled without filtration and with just a small bit of sulfur. The POP wines are the youngest, freshest take on the Radikon style yet, though the Rosso absolutely retains the deeply savory character that makes their reds stand out in the first place. Definitely a walk on the wilder side (as is the Radikon way), with a distinctive earthy, mushroom-funk nose at first open; not far behind there's plenty of red fruit, crushed stones, and herbs that shine through. The Merlot gives you darker, softer, plummier flavors and supple texture; the Cab, some structure and spice. A stylish, juicy, contemporary red, it’s a wine that certainly – well – pops, and we’re thrilled to have yet another standout bottling from one of the first families of Friuli.

‘1593’ refers to the date of the first written documentation of Dolcetto in the archives of Dogliani. It’s a fitting title since Nicoletta Bocca has made it her life’s work to reveal this grape’s profound connection to her special zone and its proud status among the most expressive and age-worthy wines in the Piemonte. Made from her best and oldest parcels only in the best vintages, the ‘1593’ is a wine that pushes Dolcetto to the outer limits. Nicoletta utilizes extended aging to maximum effect, with the wine spending six long years in large cask before transferring to tank and bottle for a further four years. This wine opens with a dusky, dazzling nose – a prescription-strength hit of savory Piemontese essence – soft leather, dried potpourri, and a touch of tobacco box mingling with black pepper, hoisin, and a trace of licorice. Beneath the savory depth, a bright cherry perfume rises with a lift of acidity, giving the wine an immediate sense of energy. On the palate, it’s rich but never heavy, the wild, dark, brambly fruit framed by crisp, warm tannins that glide rather than grip. Subtle tertiary notes of spice and leather unfold with each sip, striking a perfect balance between refinement and untamed character. The wine’s label lists several revelatory, if quasi-occult, events from 1593 – from the of genesis of Shakespeare’s sonnets to the persecution of philosopher Giordano Bruno – culminating with Dolcetto’s aforementioned first appearance in the archives; this bottle does such a lineage justice, telling the story of impeccable fruit that has spent enough time evolving to impart upon us something truly compelling. Only 1800 bottles produced.

Named after the wind which cools the valley that Marco calls home, this is a refreshingly original take on Merlot – and, yes, 'refreshing' and 'Merlot' are not mutually exclusive! Merlot has long been produced in Veneto, since the mid-1800s, and the grape's popularity in the region increased further after the phylloxera epidemic of the era destroyed native grapes. It is now inexorably linked to Veneto's heritage, but luckily – in our case here – defined by the unique volcanic terroir of the region’s Western hills, and of course Marco’s hands-off approach. Hailing from biodynamically-tended older vines, fruit sees spontaneous fermentation on skins for a couple of weeks in concrete before aging in old barrels for eight months. The wine is never fined, filtered, or touched by SO2. ‘L'Arietta’ treads the line between old school rusticity and lo-fi vibrancy – full of spiced black currant compote, red hibiscus essence, wild plums., earth, herbs, and brine. A wine to make the most of the season's larder, it screams for some wild mushrooms or a nice joint of meat.

Barbacan’s Rosso Alpi Retiche is pure, unvarnished Valtellina — a mountain-born expression of Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) that speaks directly of stone, altitude, and air. While blending of sites obviously continues today, this particular, highly artisanal approach has almost completely disappeared. Named after his grandparents, the Margherita Otto ethos remains small-scale and old-world: hand-managed, co-fermented plots, native yeasts, long macerations, with long aging in large botti. His first vintage was in 2015, and beginning in 2019, he's made a microscopic amount of Langhe Nebbiolo in addition to the Barolo, in the same style but vinified for earlier drinking. Pulled from vines in Vignane as well as declassified Barolo fruit from Castiglione and Serralunga, his Langhe Nebbiolo is intoxicatingly fragrant, with a gorgeous nose of red cherries, roses, and violets. Bright framing acids and fine tannins make this immediately mouth-watering, but also suited to a bit more time laid down (and/or a patient decant this autumn.) The 2012 vintage saw Eduardo uproot his life and shift to Sicily, interning at the now famed property of Arianna Occhipinti. Soon thereafter Eduardo was offered the position of head enologist at Azienda Passopisciaro, considered by many as one of the leading pioneers of ‘new-wave’ Etna wine of the past decade. Despite Eduardo’s ‘outsider’ status, he endeavored in forging his own path, renting and farming several parcels on the north side of Etna, and bottling his first commercial vintage in 2014. While working originally and with very little cellar intervention, there is no formulaic recipe for Eduardo’s winemaking. ‘My vinification depends on the vintage,’ says Eduardo. The harvest date usually depends on altitude, and only the single vineyard wines are vinified separately. ‘I am trying to translate each vineyard and each vintage in different ways,’ he says. Though the properties he works with are located firmly on the slopes of Sicily’s famed volcano, the grapes are harvested but then transported to and vinified on the Occhipinti estate in Vittoria, thus the wines, while technically being very much so, do not carry the Etna Rosso name.

Made from 100% Marzemino grown in Trentino’s La Rua vineyard, this is a faithful expression of one of northern Italy’s most characterful native grapes —delicate, fragrant, and effortlessly drinkable.
