We're thinking of it as big nod to the days when Sangio was always blended with white varieties; here, aromas and flavors ping pong from red to white and back in a 'best of' manner: candied strawberry, pulply yellow fruit, blood orange, earthy chamomile, and lots of cherries and dried flowers. With super bright, lip-smakcing acidity, lingering, powdery tannins, and a lightly bitter, terracotta finish, 'Area 51' is not for the faint of heart, but proves the truth - about great Tuscan natural wine - is out there...

An ever-evolving combo of Alicante, Carignano, Sangiovese and Mourvedre the mighty Unlitro has all but cemented its cult status these days. It's dry, lemony, and crisp, and, like the Mediterranean winds that sweep over the vineyards, a little salty, too.

Vigne Basse is one of several Vermentino wines made by Giuliani; this particular version comes from their lower-elevation vines (hence the ‘basse’) at 50–100 m in elevation, 5 km from the sea as the crow flies. It is just inside Tuscany but within spitting distance of the border with Liguria. Retaining freshness is one of Giuliani’s obsessions, it seems. Hand-harvesting starts in September but the moment of picking varies across the several vineyard parcels. Grapes from these soils are a little lower in acidity than those from their shale soils – where they grow Vermentino for their Fosso di Corsano label – so in the Vigne Basse they include 5% Albarola to raise the acidity a little. They also avoid malolactic conversion in all their white wines for the same reason. The cellar is on four levels so the grapes are moved by gravity in order to preserve the quality of the fruit. Slow pressing is followed by fermentation with ambient yeasts in stainless-steel tanks, where the wine then ages four months on lees before bottling. Have a glass whenever pesto is involved.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7695/files/TerenzuolaVigneBasseVermentino_5ad9f052-adce-48a9-be23-6a532fbdef38.jpg?v=1689284241
bibi-graetz-casamatta-bianco-2024
Bibi Graetz Casamatta Bianco 2024

Sourced entirely from Bibi Graetz's youngest vineyards on the tiny island of Giglio, off the coast of Tuscany, ‘Casamatta’ Bianco is a blend of 60% Ansonica, 30% Vermentino, and 10% Trebbiano. The fruit is harvested by hand from steep, granite-rich terraces overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, gently pressed, and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel before resting on its lees for six months. The absence of oak allows the island's remarkable terroir — sun, wind, salt, and stone — to take center stage. Casamatta opens with aromas of Meyer lemon, white peach, citrus blossom, and wild Mediterranean herbs, lifted by a distinctly salty edge that immediately evokes Giglio's sea breezes. The palate is bright yet surprisingly textured, balancing juicy orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a mouthwatering mineral streak born of the island's decomposed granite soils. Ansonica contributes breadth and subtle almond notes, Vermentino brings citrus and energy, while Trebbiano ties everything together with freshness and finesse. The finish is long, crisp, and briny, leaving lingering impressions of lemon zest, crushed stone, and sea spray. This absolutely captures the unmistakable character of Giglio, a rugged island where ancient vines cling to dramatic terraces above the Mediterranean, producing wines that are as sun-soaked as they are saline.
