The grapes come from the Faset and Rabajà vineyards, then are aged for 18 months in Slavonian botti grandi followed by three months in stainless steel and 14 months in the bottle before release. Vibrant acids lift a core of red berry fruit, kirsch, white flowers, mint and chalk. Medium in weight and beautifully delineated, the 2020 is utterly sublime. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous inner sweetness.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7695/files/CastelloDiVerdunoBarbaresco_18bf03d2-f882-4108-b9da-ca8ec67dba26.jpg?v=1724885116
castello-di-verduno-barbaresco-rabaja-bass-2019
Castello di Verduno Barbaresco Rabaja-Bas 2019

The 2019 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is another absolutely compelling wine in this range, pulled from what was formerly a portion of the Rabajà cru, one of the three or four most famous vineyards in Italy. The 2019 is super expressive right out of the gate. A beguiling mélange of dark cherry, wild herbs, menthol, licorice, earthiness and dried flowers gives it strong savory tones to play off of the Nebbiolo fruit. Big, but elegant, translucent finesses and power come togeyher beautifully in this deep, structured Barbaresco. Fruit is grown the estate's signature Marne di Sant'agata soil, which is 30% sand, 55% clay and 15% limestone. It might be a crude, somewhat misguided comparison, but for a grape that delivers such an incredible amount of ‘interesting’ coupled with both sheer drinkability and pocket friendly pricing – well, it’s hard not to draw parallels. Castello di Verduno's bottling is a stellar example of the estate’s firm handle on the varietal – pulsating red fruit vibrancy, oodles of rose petal-y floral spice and an intriguing undercurrent of peppercorn (maybe red, maybe white?) that is so indicative of the grape. This is a bottle that we at the shop crush in large quantities whenever it’s on the shelves – it’s one of those rare, ‘goes with everything and nothing,’ drink year round, habit-forming wines that we always want up our sleeves but never seem to have enough of around.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7695/products/CastelloDiVerdunoPelavergaPiedmont2019_6ab18bb9-1167-4d4a-a5e5-98402394a6b7.jpg?v=1697232069
castello-di-verduno-barolo-2021
Castello di Verduno Barolo 2021

The 2019 Barolo is all from Boscato, in the town of Verduno. Aged for 32 months in large Slavonian oak casks and 1 month in steel tanks, followed by 6 months in the bottle prior to its release. Sweet tobacco, earthiness, orange peel, cedar, dried flowers, licorice and herbs give the 2019 notable aromatic presence, while the fruit is pushed more into the background.
